Two Wacky Lost Dog Stories

Here’s a “lost dog” story with a happy ending! A family was fishing off a pier on the James River near Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday, July 7. Then their golden retriever jumped off the pier into the water–which is perfectly normal dog behavior! But then the dog was pulled under by the current, and he never surfaced. His family searched and searched, but they never found him.

But much to their delight, their presumed dead dog was only a lost dog! Someone called the local animal services department at 3 a.m. on Sunday to report a dog stuck in a culvert near the river’s shore. The lost dog was weak and had a dislocated hip when he was retrieved. But he’s doing better, as his dislocated hip has since popped back into place. His family is glad that he was just temporarily lost and not a goner!

The other wacky lost dog story takes place in Gary, Indiana. A lost dog was found near county roads 600W and 300N in Union Township; it’s a male sheltie, approximately four years old. Shelties are long-haired and look very much like miniature collies. But this was wasn’t your usual lost dog, appearing hungry, scared and dirty. Oh no, this lost dog was meticulously clean and perfectly groomed, complete with trimmed nails! And this perfectly groomed lost dog is blind.

That’s what makes Porter Country Animal Shelter workers think that the lost dog couldn’t have wandered far from home and is deeply loved. The amazing little lost dog even sits and comes to the workers on command.

Workers at the Porter County Animal Shelter are trying their hardest to reunite the well cared-for sheltie with his family. However, the Indiana Sheltie Rescue Organization is offering to rescue the lost dog and find a caring family for it if the owners cannot be located. If you have any information regarding this little lost dog, please contact Nicole at the Porter County Animal Shelter at 219.465.3550.
