Thieves Loot French Wine Merchant in Massive Heist
24 Feb 2007
Pulling a page straight out of Ocean's 11, professional thieves in France purportedly made off with almost $8,000,000 US (€6,000,000) in top-flight Bordeaux wines in what police suspect was an inside job. The thieves' loot consisted of over 3000 bottles of grand cru classé (read: top shelf) Bordeux wines, namely Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Mouton-Rothschild, and various other exclusive vintages. Inhouse employees determined the bottles were missing only after someone noticed empty spaces in the bins of the stock room this past Monday morning. "After completing an inventory, we realized we were missing over 250 cases of our most prestigious wines," said Laurent Barrier, export… more
After 20 Years A Ring Lost and Found
23 Feb 2007
It's an unlikely story - after more than two decades, the lost college ring of a retired undercover CIA agent was reported found in an underwater cave. In early February, a staff writer named Steven Ruic at Notre Dame college was e-mailed by a professional diver from Germany claiming he'd found a ring bearing the Notre Dame insignia. The diver discovered the lost ring - engraved with 1976 as the graduation year - while diving near Africa's Maurtius coast. Unfortunately the ring was without the thin, underside piece that typically bears the owner's name. Hoping to reunite the owner with their long… more
Winter Wear Floods Lost and Found Bins
22 Feb 2007
Almost like clockwork every year, a mountain of jackets begins to grow in school lost and found bins throughout the country. While the mornings are still brisk, youngsters head off to school donning warm winter coats, but return in the warmer afternoon hours sans coat. And without any idea where it might be. In Tempe, Arizona, pink princess sweaters and boy's hoodies overflow the lost and found bin, while the massive pile of similar wintry goods rises nearly four feet high in a hallway of Herrera Elementary School in Phoenix. After a number of months with no likelihood of an owner coming to… more

Better the Odds of Finding Your Lost Pet
8 Feb 2007
Discovering that you have a lost cat or dog is one of the worst feelings a pet owner can have. Not knowing whether your animal is alive, injured, stolen, or worse, is a great cause of anxiety and distress. All too often, a simple trip to the park, or quick jaunt around the block can end up with the heartbreak of a missing animal, as they slip out of the collar, or run off when playing unleashed. Odds are typically fairly slim of getting a lost dog or lost cat back, but even more so if the animal is not wearing… more
Waiting For A Ring
1 Feb 2007
LONGMONT - It's been 10 years, but Don Alspaugh still waits for the stranger to call. He has no idea where she lives. He hopes she's still alive. The stranger, most likely a woman, holds the answer to a mystery. On Jan. 14, 1997, the Longmont attorney found two women's rings in the snow while picking up his son from Denver International Airport. He has never given up on finding the owner. He won't sell them or give them away, even though they're worth about $5,000. "I don't own them (the rings)," Alspaugh, 64, said. "They are not mine." Almost every year since he found… more

Brown and his coworkers searched diligently for it, to no avail. He thought he would never see his ring again. Little did Brown, a 1969 Lexington graduate, realize at the time is that he'd put that same ring on his finger more than 38 years later.… more

Lost and found Identification key to finding missing pets
15 Jan 2007
Stacy Carrier, a social work major at the University of North Alabama, screamed, jumped and gave thanks when she saw Eli, her 1-year-old half beagle, half border collie. Three days before, a quick jaunt outside for the dog turned into a search that included posting fliers, calling vets and finally visiting the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter where she found Eli. "It's fabulous," she exclaimed upon retrieving her dog, who wasn't wearing a collar when he ventured off. "I was almost getting adjusted to the fact that I wasn't going to have a dog."… more
Wallet and Kindness and the Lost and Found
10 Jan 2007
Christmas spirit was in full effect at Chick-fil-A in Stafford County recently. After a visit to the restaurant's drive-through window, I realized my wallet was gone. In a panic I went back and asked if a wallet was turned in. I searched the grounds to no avail. It's hard to describe how upset I was, as the wallet contained all of my Christmas money. I started to pray; it was a tough lesson to learn.… more
Dog Lost In Colorado Found In Tennessee
4 Jan 2007
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Seven months after disappearing from her yard in Colorado, a little rat terrier named Daisy walked into the arms of Tracie Crass in Knoxville, some 1,300 miles away, and got an airplane ride home. "The kindness of people gives you a reason to believe," said Daisy's owner Vonda Lundstrom of Aurora, Colo. "It's the best Christmas present." Crass spotted 2-year-old Daisy wandering down her sidewalk on Christmas night. She assumed the 12-pound dog had slipped out of its home amid holiday festivities. So she brought the pooch on her porch and waited for its owner to come looking for it.… more

Tales from the Lost and Found
2 Jan 2007
Excerpt: But if photos make up the bulk of lost and found, they are by no means the whole picture. Shopping lists, unpaid bills, uncashed paychecks and laminated obituaries turn up regularly. "I keep waiting for the $50 bill," says Bange, before recalling that a co-worker actually did come across a $50 bill a few years ago. Her most memorable find, unfortunately, was several years ago when she was a student teacher in Louisiana and library books still had pockets for check-out cards inside their covers. Tucked into one returned book was a used chaw of tobacco.… more

Pound Is A Lost And Found For Homeless Dogs
20 Jul 2006
Puppy love is suffering from heat, summer storms, and a heavy dose of misconception. Animal Control Officer Carolee Mason said, "I think people get young dogs and it's for their kids." Adding the necessity to care for a growing puppy to caring for children and managing a career can compound already hectic lives, she suggested. "People don't have time and eventually dogs don't fit into the family," she said. Many of those dogs end up at the pound and under Ms Mason's care. She and her assistant, Kennel Attendant Amy Andras, care for the dogs displaced from their homes, or who are homeless. "People… more

Lost Wallet Found 60 Years Later
12 Jun 2006
(WCCO) Milladore, Wis. Do you know what's in your wallet? It can say a lot about you. One wallet is saying a lot, more than 60 years after it was lost. SAUGUS - Can you help this gnome find his home? While not quite the stuff of an Amber Alert, Saugus police are hoping the public might help restore half a dozen lawn ornaments to their rightful owners. Spirited away from area front lawns in late May - police suspect by members of the Saugus High School senior class for a senior prank - police reclaimed a bevy of lawn ornaments from Saugus High last weekend, after a startled member of the janitorial staff called local authorities to report finding the ill-gotten decorations spread about the school's campus. A joke's a joke, said the… more
